I have owned both.The Ultra version, which is less than half the price of the Deluxe version at the time of this review, is the one with the blue pill grabber and the blue lid. Other than the price, the advantages of the Ultra over the Deluxe are twofold: the Ultra has a larger capacity for halved pills (if you leave the pills in the cutter after halving, as I do), and it has the blade guard. The blade guard is a piece of plastic that not only covers the blade when the cutter is open, but also helps keep the cutter closed when not in use. As pointed out by other reviewers, the downside is that the blade guard is prone to failure, and once that happens the cutter does not close tightly - this also happened to me after about 1 year of use (cutting one tablet every two days), which led me to purchase the Deluxe. The red sides are flexible and sticky like rubber, so it's easy to place the tablet correctly in the top of the triangular area to split it in half accurately. The clear top is helpful so you can see if you are cutting the tablet as accurately as you would like. I often placed the tablet on the red surface, lowered the top, and then realigned the tablet to get a perfect cut. Then, I tipped the unit and the halves slid out of the way into the storage compartment so I could continue to split a few more.However, this splitter does NOT work well for non-standard shapes like ovals, hexagons and other irregular shapes. They are difficult to place accurately, and often don't stay in place while the blade slices them. Upon further inspection, it NEVER EVER EVER cuts the pill accurately. I just got a new med yesterday, which was a round pill. It should have worked, but when you place the pill in, you semi close the lid to look to see if it's in the center, you think it is, you cut, and voila....the pill is cut in a 1/3 half to 2/3 half ratio.I am frustrated! The pills I take must be close to the exact mcg, and I have now wasted over 5 pills to just have ONE cut evenly. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY!!!!! |
