While test-driving the Taylor GS Mini a few weeks back, I decided to compare my Martin D16 RGT with the higher-end Martins (D18, D28, D42 . . .). At best I had hoped for some strong similarities, but with each comparison the D16 RGT held it's own. For thousands of dollars less, it's a comparable guitar. If you are considering a low-end Martin, I would save up the extra $300 and purchase the D16 RGT. Also, don't buy a guitar without playing it first. Find a Martin dealer in your area and compare the D16 RGT with the lower-end D series. You'll hear what I'm talking about. Have fun! Great wood, great construction but none of the extra bells and whistles. There are no electronics, no fancy inlays and their are some composite materials (neck, bridge and saddle). But man oh man, does this guitar sound fantastic! I tried it side by side with a comparably priced Taylor and the Martin won hands down in my opinion. Great overall tone, rich low end and clear crisp single notes. This guitar holds its tune very well and is easy to change tunings without spending too much time "dialing in" your tuning. Plays great with a capo all the way up to the 7th fret (I use a Shubbb capo right on the fret). Just a hurricane of sound when strumming and plenty loud enough for finger-picking. Spend the extra time and/or money and have it set-up by a pro. By default, the action on these guitars are a bit high from the factory.
